Job Purpose

Herc Rentals seeks talented people for a Mechanic Intern position. This is an excellent opportunity for motivated college and technical students who want to gain valuable industry insight, hands-on experience with construction and industrial equipment, and mentorship from experienced technicians. Successful completion of the internship program may lead to a possible full-time position upon graduation with a company whose reputation speaks for itself.

 

What you will do...

  • Assist Mechanics and Lead Mechanics with routine maintenance and repairs on construction and industrial fleet equipment
  • Develop a basic understanding of construction and industrial fleet equipment and general mechanical systems
  • Gain exposure to diagnosing and troubleshooting fuel systems, electrical systems, and hydraulic systems
  • Support oil changes, lubrication, tire checks, hose inspections, battery checks, and other routine services under supervision
  • Observe and assist with equipment inspections to identify wear, damage, or needed repairs
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area
  • Learn and follow all company safety procedures, protocols, and OSHA compliance standards
  • Assist with documentation, service reports, and work order entry
  • Shadow experienced technicians to build technical knowledge and industry-specific skills
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by supervisor or mentor

 

 

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in a college or technical/vocational program, nearing completion of a diesel, automotive, or heavy equipment technology curriculum
  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Valid driver's license with a good driving record
  • Demonstrate exceptional leadership and communication skills
  • Strong willingness to learn and take direction from experienced mechanics and supervisors
  • Basic understanding of hand tools and shop safety practices preferred
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule to accommodate school and internship program requirements
  • Reliable transportation to and from the branch
  • All employment is contingent on successful completion of drug and background screening

 

Skills

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to work effectively with mechanics, supervisors, and customers
  • Eagerness to learn, attention to detail, and dependability
  • Basic computer skills for work order entry and documentation
  • Ability to safely lift 50 lbs. frequently
  • Ability to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods
  • Ability to work indoors and outdoors as required
  • Ability to bend, crouch, squat, kneel, stoop, and perform repetitive tasks (stretching, turning, twisting, reaching overhead)
