Short Description

Under the primary direction of the Regional Director of Safety with a dotted line to the Sr. DOT Manager

Regional DOT Manager performs activities primarily related to DOT compliance and driver safety training.

Responsibilities

The key responsibilities and accountabilities for the incumbent are to:

  • Oversee all aspects of Regional DOT Compliance to prevent DOT violations and lower DOT Safer Score.
  • Monitor and perform driver coaching sessions for flagged incidents in the Electronic Monitoring Program
  • Monitor region drivers using current ELD system computer platform ensuring all drivers RODS/ELD are compliant with DOT guidelines.
  • Attend regular weekly driver safety meetings for each region/district.
  • Troubleshoot and provide guidance to region drivers on ELD device issues.  Ensure all driver devices are functioning properly.  
  • Conduct Driver Safety Training for all regional employees. Ensure all employees have driver training.
  • Monitor new hires to ensure Driver Safety training attendance within 45 days of hire. 
  • Train new CMV Drivers using the Driver Equipment Qualification Standard (DEQS), To ensure newly hired drivers understand proper tiedown procedures and policies surrounding pickup/delivery and customer satisfaction.
  • Ride with drivers and provide coaching as necessary on the job performance, i.e. Load Securement, driving habits.
  • Visit each branch and conduct DOT Annual Audit. Ensuring branches comply with DOT regulations.  
  • Conduct Truck Inspections using Herc DOT Truck Inspection platform to ensure trucks meet DOT and Herc safety requirements. 

Professional Experience

• Five (5) years’ experience driving and a Herc Master or Legacy Driver. and or associate degree in law enforcement, transportation management, or a related field.
• 3 – 5 years of DOT and Fleet Management experience preferably in a similar industry sector.
• Knowledgeable of DOT Driver Qualification Requirements.
• Good knowledge of legal requirements and procedures.
• Experience with electronic logging platforms.
• Must have good communication and interpersonal skills.
• Highly analytical with strong attention to detail.

Educational Background

Licenses - Possession of a valid Commercial Motor Vehicle operator’s license with Tank and Hazmat Endorsement

Skills

  • Principles and practices of safety training; working independently in absence of direct supervision; and the appropriate methods and means of dealing with human behaviour situations in a variety of business circumstances. DOT Regulations
  • Communicating effectively, verbally and in writing, in a diverse range of audiences and settings
  • Assessing HERC employee drivers training needs
  • Assisting in developing and/or improving driver training programs
  • Working long and irregular hours, and under pressure conditions
  • Maintaining order in an environment of changing priorities
  • Ability to travel to multiple locations (planned 50%)
  • Computer competency: Must be adept in use of MS Office, particularly PowerPoint, Excel, Word, and ideally Access, Internet and email
