Job Purpose

As a Field Service Mechanic A, you are a master technician and will assume a leadership role in product knowledge and standards of quality in the field. Field Service Mechanic A's have mastered the standard operating procedures at the branch, region, and national level and serve as a mentor to B and C level field mechanics. The primary focus of a Herc Rentals Field Service Mechanic A is to utilize their mechanical expertise to lead fleet maintenance and repair operations at customer job sites, ensuring Herc Rentals equipment remains operational and on the rental 'ready line'. This goal is achieved safely and professionally through an effective preventative and corrective maintenance program, executed from a fully equipped service truck.

 

What you will do...

Field Fleet Maintenance Leadership

  • Maintain PM schedules for Herc-owned fleet at active job sites.
  • Operate/test equipment onsite to confirm quality standards before and after repairs.
  • Independently perform routine maintenance and repairs on fleet equipment and trucks.
  • Perform oil changes, lubrication, tire/hose/battery replacements, and related field services.
  • Recondition/replace heavy equipment parts and diagnose wear/tear onsite.
  • Keep service truck and inventory clean, organized, and stocked.
  • Produce detailed service reports and repair logs per visit.
  • Follow field procedures, protocols, and safety requirements; other duties as assigned.

Advanced Diagnostics & Repairs (Field)

  • Diagnose engines, DC electrical, propane, hydraulic, and fuel systems onsite using diagnostic/hand tools and measuring instruments.
  • Repair using electrical schematics; inspect overvoltage protection and indicator lights.
  • Replace/diagnose control modules; reprogram firmware/software via laptop/tablet tools.
  • Apply computer-controlled diagnostics to resolve electrical issues without branch return.
  • Diagnose lithium electrical issues, intermittent faults, and post-fire failure analysis.
  • Diagnose/repair safety-critical circuits to restore equipment onsite; install aftermarket electrical components.
  • Diagnose DPF/DEF system issues; troubleshoot and calibrate mechanical, electronic, and power loss issues.
  • Conduct failure analysis supporting policy review and warranty eligibility.
  • Analyze/test lubrication systems; replace injectors and common rail components.

Advanced Aerial & Hydraulic Systems (Field)

  • Repair/reseal hydraulic cylinders; diagnose pumps, motors, wiring, sensors.
  • Inspect lithium battery charging; recalibrate aerial systems; perform annual aerial inspections.
  • Service emission control components, including DPF.
  • Diagnose pressure loss, overheating, sluggish movement.
  • Use computerized tools to trace electrical faults, connections, switches, sensors, and safety interlocks.

Field Leadership & Mentorship

  • Assist shop lead with damage estimates, repairs, and documentation onsite.
  • Take service calls in shop lead's absence; dispatch/coordinate Field Service Mechanics for timely repairs.
  • Assist training Field Service Mechanic B/C techs under shop lead direction.
  • Enter/review work orders and order parts via fleet management system from the field.
  • Serve as primary customer contact onsite, maintaining a professional, responsive presence.

 

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid driver's license with a clean driving record; ability to operate a fully equipped service truck and be able to obtain a FMCSA regulated Driver Qualification File (DQF)
  • Ownership of sufficient selection of hand and air/electric tools to complete most repairs and services.
  • Ability to drive/operate multiple types of vehicles and equipment.
  • Ability to safely lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Demonstrated mastery of all Field Service Mechanic B and C-level tasks.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of electrical, hydraulic, propane, and fuel systems.
  • Proficiency with computerized diagnostic tools and fleet management systems.
  • Must be able to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and job site environments.

Skills

  • Ability to understand detailed technical schematics, owner manuals, and product warning labels in the field.
  • Ability to operate and test equipment such as boom lifts, forklifts, compressors, portable and stationary generators, hydraulics, pumps, and assorted tools and equipment.
  • Ability to follow up with customers in a timely manner and maintain a professional onsite presence.
  • Ability to handle assorted tools properly and safely in a field environment.
  • Attention to detail and strong situational awareness on active job sites.
  • Solid written and verbal communication skills; ability to perform computer operations such as opening and closing work orders from the field.
  • Solid and proven computer skill set to enter and review work orders remotely.
  • Strong understanding of time management and the ability to prioritize multiple service calls.
  • Works and communicates effectively with all levels of the company, including customers and job site supervisors.
  • Interpersonal skills to communicate effectively and efficiently; teamwork, listening skills, and dependability.
  • Ability to work both indoors and outdoors as required
  • Ability to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods
  • Ability to perform repetitive tasks, including stretching, turning, twisting, and reaching overhead
  • Ability to bend, crouch, squat, kneel, and stoop for extended periods

Pay Range: $30 - $35 per hour
