Short Description

The Shop Supervisor position utilizes mechanical expertise to support the needs of the branch in a professional, safe and timely manner. The individual in this position is responsible for the training, development, management, and performance appraisals for the heavy equipment mechanics, yard workers and utility workers. The position is also responsible for prioritizing and assigning tasks and ensures that all service calls are completed in a professional and timely manner at the highest standards of quality. This team member is a master technician who leads the branch in product knowledge and promotes standards of quality. The Shop Supervisor works closely with the Branch Manager to ensure efficiency and profitability.


Active participant in the Herc Rentals Safety culture, prioritizes the safety of people at all times. Follow a consistent and regular schedule to perform various types of maintenance on heavy equipment, construction equipment and various pieces of machinery. Assigns work, coaches, and mentors other Mechanics Monitors work orders. Manages inventory. Addresses complaints and resolves problems in a timely and effective manner. Assists mechanics with repairs and maintenance as needed. Ability to diagnose and troubleshoot complex issues with fuel systems, electrical systems, hydraulic systems and propane systems. Recondition and replace assorted parts of the heavy equipment.  Operate and test equipment. Diagnoses problem areas for any significant wear or tear on the equipment. Maintain work area in a clean and organized manner. Produce timely and detailed service reports and repair logs. Follow all company procedures and protocols. Build positive relationships with customers. Perform additional duties as assigned.


  • Must have detailed knowledge and previous work experience working on internal combustion engines (gas and diesel), DC electrical systems, propane systems, hydraulics, track equipment and various construction equipment
  • Possesses a solid understanding of welding techniques
  • Ability to read and comprehend the standards of operating procedures, owner’s manuals and product/warning labels
  • Ability to operate large, heavy machinery
  • Knowledge of troubleshooting fundamentals

Professional Experience

Be able to perform basic physical tasks such as lifting 50lbs or more, reading, typing and writing
Must be able to work indoors and outdoors when required of the job
5 + Years of Heavy Equipment or Relevant Experience
Able to independently structure and manage workflow and priorities and those of direct reports
Comfortable within a fast-paced change "change management" environment
Excellent customer service and time management skills
3+ years of managerial experience highly preferred

Educational Background

Journeyman Ticket

Conditions of Employment

A valid driver's license with a clean driving record
Equipment rental experience preferred Oracle and RentalMan experience preferred
