Job Purpose

As a Mechanic A, you are a master technician and will assume a leadership role in product knowledge and standards of quality within the branch. Mechanic A's have mastered the standard operating procedures at the branch, region, and national level and serve as a mentor to B and C level mechanics. The primary focus of a Herc Rentals Mechanic A is to utilize their mechanical expertise to lead fleet maintenance operations needed to keep Herc Rentals equipment on the rental 'ready line'. This goal can be achieved safely and professionally through an effective preventative and corrective maintenance program.

 

What you will do...

Fleet Maintenance Leadership

  • Develop and maintain a consistent schedule of performing preventative maintenance on all Herc-owned fleet at the branch.
  • Operate and test equipment to ensure it passes Herc Rentals quality and efficiency standards.
  • Perform routine maintenance and repairs on all Herc fleet equipment and trucks independently.
  • Conduct oil changes, lubrication of equipment, tire replacements, hose repairs, battery replacements, and assorted services.
  • Recondition and replace assorted parts of heavy equipment.
  • Diagnose problem areas for any significant wear or tear on equipment.
  • Maintain work area in a clean and organized manner.
  • Produce timely and detailed service reports and repair logs.
  • Follow all company filed procedures and protocols.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

 

Advanced Diagnostics & Repairs

  • Diagnose internal combustion engines, DC electrical systems, propane systems, hydraulics, and fuel systems.
  • Perform major repairs to maintain fleet equipment using diagnostic tools, hand tools, and measuring instruments independently.
  • Diagnose and repair using electrical schematics.
  • Inspect and diagnose overvoltage protection systems and indicator lights.
  • Replace or diagnose control modules.
  • Reprogram firmware/software where applicable.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of computer-controlled diagnostics.
  • Use diagnostic tools to remedy electrical issues.
  • Electrical diagnostic mastery.
  • Diagnose lithium electrical issues.
  • Complex intermittent fault diagnosis.
  • Failure analysis after electrical fire.
  • Diagnose and repair safety-critical electrical circuits.
  • Install aftermarket electrical components.
  • Diagnose issues on Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) systems.
  • Diagnose issues on Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) systems.
  • Use diagnostic tools and computerized systems to troubleshoot and calibrate mechanical, electronic problems, and power loss issues.
  • Conduct failure analysis to determine policy review and extended warranty eligibility.
  • Analyze and test engine lubrication systems.
  • Replace injectors and common rail components.

 

Advanced Aerial & Hydraulic Systems

  • Repair/reseal hydraulic cylinders.
  • Diagnose hydraulic pumps, motors, wiring, and sensors.
  • Inspect lithium batteries for proper charging.
  • Complete system recalibration on aerial equipment.
  • Perform annual aerial inspections.
  • Service emission control components including DPF.
  • Diagnose pressure loss, overheating, and sluggish movement.
  • Use computerized tools to trace and diagnose electrical faults, loose connections, and issues with switches, sensors, and safety interlocks.

 

Leadership & Mentorship

  • Assist shop lead with customer damage estimates and repairs.
  • Take service calls when shop lead is absent and dispatch Field Service Mechanic to ensure repairs are completed in a timely and efficient fashion.
  • Assist in training Mechanic C and B technicians while taking direction from the shop lead.
  • Enter and review work orders and complete part ordering via the fleet management system.

 

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Ownership of a sufficient selection of hand and air/electric tools to complete most repairs and services
  • Ability to drive and operate multiple types of vehicles and equipment
  • Demonstrated mastery of all Mechanic B and C-level tasks
  • Comprehensive knowledge of electrical, hydraulic, propane, and fuel systems
  • Proficiency with computerized diagnostic tools and fleet management systems

 

Skills

  • Ability to understand detailed technical schematics, owner manuals, and product warning labels
  • Ability to operate and test equipment such as boom lifts, forklifts, compressors, portable and stationary generators, hydraulics, pumps, and assorted tools and equipment
  • Ability to follow up with customers in a timely manner
  • Ability to handle assorted tools properly and safely
  • Attention to detail
  • Solid written and verbal communication skills; ability to communicate effectively with all levels of the company
  • Solid, proven computer skills to enter and review work orders and perform basic system operations
  • Strong interpersonal skills, teamwork, listening skills, and dependability
  • Understanding of the importance of time management
  • Ability to safely lift up to 50 pounds frequently
  • Ability to work both indoors and outdoors as required
  • Ability to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods
  • Ability to perform repetitive tasks, including stretching, turning, twisting, and reaching overhead
  • Ability to bend, crouch, squat, kneel, and stoop for extended periods

Pay Range: $30 - $35+ per hour based on experience
