Job Purpose

As a Mechanic B, you are an intermediate-level technician who has developed a solid foundation of mechanical knowledge and is expanding into more complex diagnostics and repairs. Mechanic B's have mastered the foundational operating procedures at the branch level and are progressing toward mastery of regional and national standards. The primary focus of a Herc Rentals Mechanic B is to utilize their growing mechanical expertise to support fleet maintenance operations needed to keep Herc Rentals equipment on the rental 'ready line'. This goal can be achieved safely and professionally through an effective preventative and corrective maintenance program, while mentoring Mechanic C-level technicians.

 

What you will do...

Preventative Maintenance

  • Maintain a consistent schedule of preventative maintenance on all Herc-owned fleet at the branch.
  • Perform routine maintenance including oil changes, filter replacements, and lubrication independently.
  • Replace oil filters, fuel filters, water pumps, thermostats, and radiators.
  • Manage coolant levels, flush systems, and maintain hose quality.
  • Perform maintenance on DPF and DEF systems.
  • Conduct visual and operational inspections of engines, belts, hoses, and all major systems.
  • Inspect for oil leaks, proper fuel type, and fluid levels per OEM recommendations.

 

Intermediate Diagnostics & Repairs

  • Diagnose and repair cooling systems.
  • Identify electronic and mechanical problems.
  • Identify and test engine cooling systems and fuel systems (fuel lines, leaks).
  • Troubleshoot and repair electrical systems including wiring, connectors, and control units.
  • Replace faulty turbos, alternators, and/or sensors.
  • Diagnose pressure loss, overheating, and sluggish movement on aerial equipment.
  • Use computerized tools to trace and diagnose electrical faults, loose connections, and issues with switches, sensors, and safety interlocks.
  • Replace hoses, hydraulic pumps, motors, wiring, and sensors.
  • Replace guardrails and platforms.
  • Repair/replace outriggers.
  • Replace aerial lift platform leveling components.
  • Perform an annual aerial inspection.
  • Service emission control components such as the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF).

 

Intermediate Electrical Tasks

  • Inspect starter motor, solenoid, and ignition switch.
  • Check amperage during cranking and listen for abnormal starter noises.
  • Inspect wiring harnesses for fraying, cracks, exposed wires, or overheating.
  • Replace damaged wiring, connectors, or harnesses as needed.
  • Inspect lighting system wiring and switches.
  • Inspect cabin for moisture ingress or electrical damage.
  • Inspect and test relays and circuitry; replace faulty components.
  • Inspect and recalibrate overvoltage protection systems and indicator lights.
  • Inspect and test voltage regulators; replace if faulty.
  • Replace faulty sensors.
  • Verify firmware/software updates.
  • Read and understand electrical schematics to support diagnostics.

 

Work Orders, Reporting & Mentorship

  • Enter and review work orders and complete part ordering via the fleet management system.
  • Assist shop lead with customer damage estimates and repairs.
  • Produce timely and detailed service reports and repair logs.
  • Recondition and replace assorted parts of heavy equipment.
  • Diagnose problem areas for significant wear or tear on equipment.
  • Assist in training Mechanic C technicians while taking direction from the shop lead.
  • Maintain work area in a clean and organized manner.
  • Follow all company filed procedures and protocols.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

 

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Ownership of a sufficient selection of hand and air/electric tools to complete most repairs and services
  • Ability to drive and operate multiple types of vehicles and equipment
  • Demonstrated proficiency in all Mechanic C-level tasks
  • Working knowledge of electrical and hydraulic systems; ability to read schematics

 

Skills

  • Ability to operate and test equipment such as boom lifts, forklifts, compressors, portable and stationary generators, hydraulics, pumps, and assorted tools and equipment
  • Solid, proven computer skills to enter and review work orders
  • Ability to understand detailed technical schematics, owner manuals, and product warning labels
  • Ability to communicate effectively and efficiently with all levels of the company
