Job Purpose

As a Mechanic C, you are an entry-level technician who will familiarize yourself with product knowledge and standards of quality within the branch. Mechanic C's will learn the standard operating procedures at the branch, region, and national level to grow their career to higher-level mechanic roles. The primary focus of a Herc Rentals Mechanic C is to utilize their mechanical training to contribute to fleet maintenance operations needed to keep Herc Rentals equipment on the rental 'ready line'. This goal can be achieved safely and professionally through an effective preventative and corrective maintenance program.

 

What you will do...

Preventative Maintenance

  • Follow a consistent schedule of performing preventative maintenance on all Herc-owned fleet at your branch.
  • Perform routine maintenance including oil changes, filter replacements, and lubrication.
  • Replace oil filters and fuel filters per OEM recommendations.
  • Monitor oil condition and replace oil when needed.
  • Manage coolant levels and quality of hoses.
  • Drain water separators to avoid moisture damage.
  • Flush cooling systems periodically to prevent corrosion and overheating.
  • Inspect air filters regularly and replace as needed.
  • Identify proper type of fluids and filters per OEM recommendation.
  • Perform maintenance on DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) and DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid) systems.
  • Conduct frequent visual inspections of engines, belts, and hoses.
  • Inspect for oil leaks around seals and gaskets.
  • Inspect for proper fuel type.

 

Equipment Operations & Inspections

  • Operate and test equipment to ensure it passes Herc Rentals quality and efficiency standards.
  • Conduct visual and operational inspections at regular intervals.
  • Monitor and change hydraulic fluid, engine oil, and fuel filters.
  • Grease moving parts such as arms, joints, and pivot points.
  • Check tire pressure, tread condition, and inspect wheels for damage.
  • Inspect hoses, pumps, valves, and cylinders for leaks.
  • Check platform and ground controls including safety indicator alarms and emergency stop buttons.
  • Inspect batteries for proper charging; clean battery terminals and fill to proper water level.
  • Conduct oil changes, lubrication of equipment, tire replacements, hose repairs, battery replacements, and assorted services.
  • Determine if engines are eligible for base warranty coverage.
  • Collaborate with supervisor to ensure machine performance meets safety and operational standards.

 

Electrical & Safety Tasks

  • Inspect battery terminals for corrosion; clean and tighten connections.
  • Test battery voltage and load capacity.
  • Verify proper battery mounting and installation.
  • Verify secure routing and mounting of harnesses.
  • Inspect connectors and plugs for damage or loose wires.
  • Test headlights, tail lights, brake lights, back-up alarm, and indicators.
  • Inspect fuse box; test power supply and replace blown fuses.
  • Check alternator belt tension and output.
  • Inspect and test charging system circuits.
  • Inspect and test sensors.
  • Inspect control modules.
  • Read and understand electrical schematics.
  • Read and understand electrical meters.
  • Know how to use a multimeter.
  • Perform lock out/tag out on equipment for jobs being performed.
  • Identify the proper additional PPE required to perform tasks.
  • Diagnose small tools and light rental equipment with assistance from senior mechanics.

 

Work Orders & Reporting

  • Enter work orders and complete part ordering via the fleet management system.
  • Produce timely and detailed service reports and repair logs.
  • Assist in reconditioning and replacing assorted parts of heavy equipment.
  • Learn what is covered and not covered by warranties.
  • Maintain work area in a clean and organized manner.
  • Follow all company filed procedures and protocols.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

 

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Ownership of a sufficient selection of hand and air/electric tools to complete most repairs and services
  • Ability to drive and operate multiple types of vehicles and equipment
  • Some knowledge of electrical and hydraulic systems; willingness to learn how to read schematics

 

Skills

  • Ability to operate and test equipment such as boom lifts, forklifts, compressors, portable and stationary generators, hydraulics, pumps, and assorted tools and equipment
  • Computer skills to support entering information into systems and completing basic operations such as opening and closing work orders
  • Ability to communicate effectively and efficiently with all employees of the branch and all levels of the company

Pay Range: $28.00 per hour
